A deflated balloon. A discarded, half-eaten ham sandwich. A forgotten sock left in the dark corner of the dryer. That's pretty much how I would describe my physical state after enduring a week of dancing and drinking at Roskilde, Denmark's wildest music festival. Clearly, I was in dire need of some rest (and food that isn't served on a paper plate). Mercifully, a Roskilde veteran let me in on a little secret: After the festival, there is no better way to counterbalance the Carlsberg then with a stay in the Danish Riviera's Kurhotel Skodsborg.
Located a 30-minute drive north of Copenhagen, Kurhotel Skodsborg is one of Denmark's finest destination spa hotels. In fact, it was awarded Best Luxury Wellness Spa Europe this year by the World Luxury Hotel Awards. What makes this property so unique, however, is its ties to Danish royalty and tradition.
King Frederic VII of Denmark acquired the Skodsborg county estate in the mid-1800s to summer here with his wife, and vestiges of the past add both character and a sense of place to the property. The King’s Hall—where state meetings and banquets were held—has been painstakingly restored according to the estate’s original drawings, so it looks just as it did in the 19th century. You can spot the king's seal and a bust of the king himself if you look closely.
In addition to its ties to Danish royalty, Kurhotel Skodsborg is known for its state-of-the-art spa facilities, designed by Henning Larsen Architects. The minimalist design is based on principles of a healthy life: light, water, air, nutrition, exercise and rest.
